NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — New York Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie missed Gov. Kathy Hochul’s State of the State address Wednesday after receiving a positive COVID-19 diagnosis.

Shortly before the governor began her address, Heastie took to Twitter to announce that he would be quarantining after two rapid tests he took “did not come back clear.”
“As part of the governor’s safety protocols prior to today’s State of the State message, I underwent two rapid COVID-19 tests which did not come back clear. I am now awaiting results from a follow up PCR test,” Heastie said in the statement.
About an hour later, he announced that his PCR test came back positive. However, he appears to be feeling well.
“I am symptom-free and will continue to quarantine in my Albany residence,” Heastie said. “Please - everyone - get tested and get vaccinated!”
Heastie is routinely tested for the virus and said he received a negative result after taking a COVID-19 test on Sunday afternoon, before arriving in Albany.
Prior to receiving his PCR test result, he continued to urge all New Yorkers to get tested for the virus if they believe they have been exposed.
“I urge anyone that I may have come into contact with to get tested per CDC guidelines,” Heastie said.
As Hochul presented her vision for New York in her first State of the State address Wednesday afternoon, she took a moment to wish Heastie well.
“We do hope Speaker of the Assembly Carl Heastie gets well soon,” the governor said.
