NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo warned of "several tough months ahead" Sunday as hospitalizations in New York state increased by nearly 300 on Sunday.
New York reported 7,623 new cases Sunday, the least in a single day in more than a week. That's out of 130,299 tests Saturday. There were 2,842 new cases in New York City.
The state's positivity rate increased from 5.36% to 5.85%.
Hospitalizations rose by 299 to 7,183. The number of patients in intensive care also increased by 58 to 1,187, as did the number of patients with intubation, which increased by 49 to 687. There were 427 hospital discharges.
The state also reported another 115 COVID-related deaths. Daily deaths in the state have surpassed 100 each day for well over a week.
"As we near the end of the holiday season, New York remains locked in a footrace between the vaccine's quick distribution and COVID-19's continued spread," Cuomo said in a statement. "It has been a tough year and we still have several tough months ahead, but we can see the light at the end of the tunnel and we will make it there if we all do our part to slow the spread."
The governor said the state is continuing to work with the medical community to administer the vaccine and grow capacity.
In New Jersey, Gov. Phil Murphy said there were 2,329 new cases. That's the lowest number of new cases since Nov. 16, according to NJ.com.
Ocean County reported the most new cases at 241. Hudson County reported 239 cases and Middlesex County saw 232 cases.
The Garden State also reported 20 more deaths, Murphy said.
Hospitalizations increased slightly, from 3,464 patients to 3,469. There were 686 patients in intensive care and 487 on ventilators.
New Jersey's hospitalizations hit a seven-month high on Tuesday, according to NJ.com. There were 3,873 patients that day.
