NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- New York state reported 14 new COVID-19-related deaths on Wednesday as the number of patients hospitalized with the virus continued to climb.

One of the 14 New Yorkers who passed away died in Allegany County; one died in Columbia County; one died in Erie County; four died in Brooklyn; two died in Nassau County; one died in Niagara County; one died in Orange County; two died in Tioga County; and one died in Ulster County, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a release.

As of Tuesday, 1,253 people in the state were hospitalized with COVID-19, up from 1,227 on Monday. Two hundred and eighty-four of the 1,253 patients were in intensive care units, and 129 were on ventilators, Cuomo said.

Of the 133,534 COVID-19 test results that came back on Tuesday, 2,126, or 1.59 percent, were positive, he added.

Excluding its COVID-19 microclusters, the state reported a 1.42 percent infection rate. The microclusters themselves reported a 2.69 percent infection rate, up from 2.63 percent.

"The surge in cases around the country and the globe is a stark reminder that this pandemic is far from over, and while we are doing a good job keeping our positivity rate comparatively low, the numbers in Western New York are a caution flag," Cuomo said in a statement.

"We're staying on top of this situation by continuing our aggressive microcluster strategy, expanding testing capacity and enforcing compliance of the public health law," he added.
