NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – New York state on Sunday reported the fewest COVID-19 deaths in a single day since late November, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.

There were 35 deaths in the state on Saturday, the lowest number of deaths since Nov. 22, the governor said.

It comes a day after the state reported 58 COVID-related deaths.

The majority of the deaths were in New York City, which reported 21 deaths. Ten of those deaths were in Brooklyn.

There have been 41,485 deaths in the state since the pandemic began, according to state data. A tally by John Hopkins University puts the number much higher at 51,537 deaths.

Cuomo said the state’s seven-day positivity rate also reached a new low for 2021 on Sunday, as did the number of statewide hospitalizations.

The state’s seven-day positivity rate was 2.92%. It’s the first time the positivity rate has fallen below 3% since Nov. 24.

Hospitals reported 3,754 coronavirus patients, 80 less than the day before, Cuomo said. It’s the lowest number of hospitalizations since Nov. 29.

The number of patients in intensive care also fell by 17 to 849, the lowest number since Dec. 4.

The number of intubated patients declined as well, falling by 15 to 520 patients. It's the lowest number since Dec. 7, Cuomo said.

New York City’s seven-day positivity rate was 3.12%. The city reported 2,688 new cases.

When it comes to vaccinations, Cuomo said 175,311 doses had been administered in the last 24 hours and 1.4 million doses in the past week.

A total of 13,297,331 doses have been administered in the state since vaccinations began.

As of Sunday, the share of New Yorkers who have received at least one vaccine dose is 41.4%, while 28.1% have completed their vaccine series.

“New York is making tremendous progress in our goal to vaccinate every New Yorker while keeping the infection and hospitalization rates down, but variants of the virus remain a concern across the state,” Cuomo said Sunday, encouraging residents to stay vigilant.
