
HUNTINGTON, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — An off-duty Suffolk County officer accused of driving while intoxicated was arrested early Sunday morning after striking a pedestrian and leaving him critically injured, authorities said.
At about at 2:30 a.m., Alexander Vargas, 30, was driving southbound on Carver Street in Huntington when he struck a 28-year-old man who was running westbound across New York Avenue, officials said.
The victim was transported with serious injuries to Huntington Hospital and listed in critical but stable condition.
Vargas, an officer at Suffolk County's Second Precinct, was charged with driving while intoxicated. He was suspended without pay.
