Bailey Williams, of Watertown, caught a 35-pound, 12-ounce channel catfish from the Black River in Jefferson County on May 8, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

Bailey's catch surpassed, by 9 ounces, the previous state record for a catfish caught from Lake Ontario in 2017.

Channel catfish are the largest catfish that live in New York, according to the DEC, which said they can “provide a challenge for even the most experienced angler.”
