NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A Long Island man was arrested Thursday in connection with a fatal hit-and-run last year, making him the second driver arrested in the case, according to prosecutors.

Jesus Matute, 73, was arrested at his home in Patchogue, for leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash that killed a 25-year-old, Nicholas Puzio, in Patchogue on Medford Avenue on March 12, 2023.

Puzio was struck twice while trying to cross Route 112. A white 2014 Honda Civic first struck him around 4 a.m. and fled the scene. Then one minute later, he was struck by a 2005 Nissan SUV that also fled the scene.

Puzio was taken to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue where he later died due to his injuries.

The first driver Elian Jurado-Zavala, 19, of Bay Shore, was identified and arrested two days after the incident and was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with a fatality. He pleaded not guilty during his arraignment on July 5.

Matute was identified as the driver of the second car and is set for arraignment on Thursday.
