LI officer stabbed during arrest lost most of his blood, still critical: report

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A Suffolk County police officer who was hospitalized after a man stabbed him in the leg on Saturday lost most of his blood and is still in critical condition, his physicians said Monday, according to a report.

Jonathan Nunez, 25, stabbed the officer as the officer was trying to arrest him in Patchogue late Saturday night, police said.

The officer "lost the majority of blood in his body and remains sedated and unable to talk," ABC7 reported Monday afternoon, citing information from Dr. James Vosswinkel, Chief of Trauma Surgery at Stony Brook University Hospital.

The officer is still in "medical shock," Vosswinkel said, adding that he is "not out of the woods yet," the outlet reported.

Nunez was driving his Mercedes erratically late Saturday night when the officer tried to pull him over, police said.

At some point during the pursuit, Nunez crashed his car into another vehicle, according to police. Nunez then got out of his Mercedes and stabbed the officer in the leg as he was trying to arrest him, police said.

He has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, driving while intoxicated and resisting arrest.
