YONKERS, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A teen boy was arrested for allegedly stabbing another boy during a dispute inside a Yonkers high school Thursday morning, authorities said.
Just after 9:30 a.m., Yonkers police responded to Gorton High School, located at 100 Shonnard Pl. for a report of a stabbing.
Upon arrival, officers located a 17-year-old boy with several non-life-threatening stab wounds to his body. He was transported to an area hospital in stable condition.
Police identified and located a 14-year-old male student as a suspect in the stabbing.
He was detained by school safety officers and placed into custody. Officials recovered the knife used in the stabbing.
He was transported to an area hospital to be evaluated before being processed at the Yonkers Police Department Youth Division.
Out of an abundance of caution, the school was placed on lockdown immediately and remained on lockdown until both the victim and the suspect were removed from the school, police said. The lockdown was lifted at approximately 10:30 a.m.
During that time, a preliminary investigation was conducted and officials determined that the suspect, who brought a knife onto the school campus, was involved in a dispute with the victim, according to authorities.
The dispute became physical and the suspect stabbed the victim several times with the knife before the altercation was broken up by school staff, cops said.
The suspect was charged with attempted assault, assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
The identities of the teens were not released by authorities due to their ages.
"Today’s incident at Gorton High School is alarming and is not indicative of our District. I have asked the Superintendent of Schools to work with Yonkers Police and the school administration to review security measures and convene a crisis intervention team for students at the school," Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano said.
