RONKONKOMA, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — Long Island's MacArthur Airport has hired a dog as the newest member of the Suffolk County Police Department trained to sniff out explosives.

Trisko, a 2-year-old golden retriever/labrador mix, will check out luggage and other items to ensure that passengers remain safe.

"Our hero here Trisko - a dog that can sniff out explosives that was donated by Canine Companion," Suffolk County Execute Ed Romaine said.

"Trisko is going to keep us safe because he's going to make sure that there's going to be no exploding bombs on the plane," he added.

After three months of training, Trisko and his handler, Officer Eric Deprima, are now exclusively assigned to Long Island Macarthur Airport, adding an extra layer to airport security, according to Suffolk County Police Commissioner Robert Waring.

Deprima takes the dog home every night and takes care of him.

The former explosives dog retired earlier this year.
