NEWARK, N.J. (1010 WINS) — Stolen luxury cars are being used in smash-and-grab thefts and attempted thefts of ATMs across New Jersey, officials said.

Essex, Bergen and Union counties are still on the hunt for culprits, while Palisades Interstate Parkway Police said they made one arrest Monday after a stolen Audi S5 crashed in Alpine.

Palisades Interstate Parkway Police began looking for the Audi after they were told that the driver refused to stop for Englewood Police, authorities told NJ.com. The Audi driver then crashed just before 3 a.m. on the exit 2 offramp of the Parkway.

After a brief foot chase, a Newark man inside was arrested and charged with obstruction, receiving stolen items, and impeding prosecution. No other occupants inside the car have been caught.

Palisades Interstate Parkway police added that the car was stolen in Lyndhurst and used in the smash-and-grab robbery of an ATM in Belleville.

The theft occurred just after midnight on Saturday at a laundromat on Washington Avenue, and the car was also allegedly used in a number of burglaries, according to WABC 7.

A Union Township police spokesman told NJ.com that ATM machines were targeted during two burglaries on that same street early Saturday.

"Although entry was gained into the businesses, the suspects were unable to take the ATMs," Capt. Pietro DiGena said. "We have not been able to identify the suspect vehicles in our crimes. Similar crimes occurred in West Orange, Hillside, Belleville, Roseland, Carlstadt and Montville where high-end stolen vehicles were utilized."

According to the report, thieves also broke into a deli and liquor store in West Orange on Friday and stole an ATM and other items. A dark-colored newer model sedan was seen fleeing on surveillance camera.

An ATM was stolen from a Kearny gas station minimart early Tuesday morning, police told them. The door was smashed with a crowbar, and they loaded the machine into a Range Rover stolen out of Franklin Lakes and fled.

WABC 7 reported that at least seven people used the Audi and two other stolen vehicles to remove ATMs.
