BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (1010 WINS) – A Suffolk County police officer suffered serious injuries in a crash on the Long Island Expressway and was assisted by off-duty officers from Nassau County, police said.
The officer's police vehicle flipped into a tree in wooded area along the LIE, near exit 55 in Brentwood, shortly after 6 p.m., according to police and images from the scene.
The officer was transported via medevac helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery and was being treated for serious injuries, officials said.
Witnesses said the driver of a red Ford Mustang was also involved, though it's unclear exactly how. That vehicle was found a short distance away, and the driver was not seriously hurt.
Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine said the driver was arrested and will be charged.

The two off-duty officers were heading to work when they assisted the injured officer, according to Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder.
"NCPD Officers Timothy Deegan and Matthew Walling are graduates of our most recent academy class last month," Ryder told Newsday. "They did exactly what they were trained to do and we are very proud of the heroic way they came to the assistance of our brother in the SCPD."
