ELIZABETH, N.J. (1010 WINS) — The Attorney General's Office is investigating a vehicle crash that killed a man and woman in New Jersey early Sunday morning.

According to a preliminary investigation, at approximately 5:42 a.m., Elizabeth Police Department officers responded to a call reporting the sound of gunfire in the area of Fourth and Center streets in Elizabeth, officials said Tuesday.

Responding officers briefly followed a vehicle of interest, which then collided with a taxi at the intersection of Grand Street and Routes 1 and 9.

The taxi driver and passenger of the taxi were killed. Their identities have not yet been released.

Two of the three occupants of the other vehicle were arrested and later hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

The third person exited the car, left the scene on foot, and remains at large, authorities said.

Prosecutors are also investigating potential criminal conduct pertaining to the fatal accident and events preceding it.
