HARRISON, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — State Police investigators are taking a slow walk along an off-ramp, trying to figure out what led a tractor-trailer to tumble off an overpass on the Cross Westchester Expressway Wednesday and land on the I-287 westbound lanes below.
The truck driver was killed. The trailer landed upside down and flattened across the highway in Harrison, its wheels pointing toward the sky.
Just behind it, a van is stopped within feet of where the trailer landed.
That driver was evidently able to slam on the brakes just in the nick of time. They were taken to the hospital.
State Police said it's too early to tell what caused the crash or if speed was a factor.
A preliminary investigation determined that the truck driver was on the Exit 9A ramp from I-287, also known as the Cross Westchester Expressway, to I-684 north around 10:20 a.m. when the truck driver lost control and flipped over the guardrail and onto the I-287 westbound lanes, police said in a news release.
The ramp from the Expressway onto the I-684 is a gentle curve to the left. Signs indicate a recommended speed of 40 mph.
All westbound lanes of Expressway are closed at Exit 9, and the left lane is closed eastbound, police said. Traffic diversions are in place.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact Investigator Hettinger at (914) 769-2600.
