LINDENHURST, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- A woman was seriously injured after her 8-year-old grandson started her car and accidentally struck her on a Long Island driveway Monday, Suffolk County police said.
According to police, the 63-year-old woman's 2016 Honda Fit was parked outside of a home on Wellwood Avenue in Lindenhurst.
The child entered the vehicle around 10 a.m. and pressed the start button, police said, causing the vehicle to roll down the driveway.
She attempted to stop the vehicle and was struck by the driver's side door, which knocked her to the ground and caused her to hit her head on the pavement.
Police said the vehicle then crashed into a curb and stopped in the middle of the street.
Neighbors rushed to help. One neighbor said he held the woman's hand before first responders arrived.
She suffered serious injuries and was transported to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip.
The boy was uninjured but very upset, according to neighbors and police.
