SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- A 6-year-old girl from New York City drowned at a Long Island beach on the Fourth of July while on a holiday outing with her family, police said Monday.

According to Southampton Town police, the girl was swept from Sebonac Creek into Great Peconic Bay around 8 a.m. Saturday. Police received the 911 call from Sebonac Inlet Road in Southampton.

The girl was with her family on a Fourth of July trip when she went into the water to retrieve footwear that was floating away, police said. She slipped and was pulled into a current.

A 16-year-old family member tried to help her but was unable to due to the current, police said. The family managed to get the attention of a kayaker, who paddled over and retrieved the girl from the water.

The child, identified as Kiara Paolasin, was brought unresponsive back to shore, where police and EMS attempted resuscitation efforts. She was ultimately pronounced dead at Southampton Hospital.

The Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office and Southampton Town police are investigating.
