SMITHTOWN, N.Y. (1010 WINS) – A delivery driver on Long Island felt that an $8 tip she was given was insufficient—so she refused to give a customer his food, video shows.
The driver was recorded by a Ring doorbell camera saying that she had driven 40 minutes—from Commack to Smithtown—to deliver the food.
“I don’t think you realize the distance that it’s coming from, because then you would never actually have given what you gave,” the driver says to the customer in undated video posted to YouTube last week.
“I drove 40 minutes, and it was extremely far and I got it to you early,” the driver says. “Do you realize how far it is? Do you realize you ordered from Commack and you’re in Smithtown?”
“That’s a 15, 20-minute drive,” the man in the home responds through the doorbell.
The driver then insists that it took her 40 minutes to drive the 12.5 miles.
“Why did you accept the pickup if you think it’s that far?” the customer says.
“They don’t let us know how far, so I think you need to adjust your tip to make it right,” the driver responds.
When the customer asks how much he tipped, the driver reminds him it was $8.
“What the hell are you look for? I gave an $8 tip,” the customer says.
“OK, I’m going to bring the food back. I’m going to bring the food back,” the driver says.
“Is she f***ing kidding?” the customer says to a woman in the home as the driver walks off with the food.
“Call DoorDash,” the woman responds.
In a statement to 1010 WINS, DoorDash said: “We take the safety of our community extremely seriously, and such inappropriate behavior is never tolerated on the DoorDash platform. Any behavior that violates this zero tolerance policy is grounds for deactivation.”
A representative for DoorDash said the company hasn't yet been able to identify the driver or customer involved.
