NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A multi-day extreme heat wave began gripping the New York City area on Wednesday, with highs set to soar near 100 degrees—and RealFeels towards 110—in the days ahead.

The dangerous heat is the effect of a heat dome that’s parked over the region, trapping hot air and humidity through the weekend.

The National Weather Service issued an Extreme Heat Warning from Wednesday afternoon to Friday evening. An Extreme Heat Watch is also in effect until Saturday evening.

In a weather alert, the NWS warned of a “multi-day extreme heat event with near record high temperatures and little overnight relief.”

“This level of heat can be deadly for those without adequate cooling and hydration. Impacts to transportation infrastructure and electrical and water systems are also possible,” the alert said.

According to AccuWeather, the high will be 95 on Wednesday; 100 on Thursday; 100 on Friday; 95 on Saturday; and 90 on Sunday.

The high humidity will push RealFeel temperatures over 100 degrees most days, with the heat index peaking on Thursday and Friday at around 105 to 110.

The NYC record high of 100 on Thursday and 103 on Friday—both set during the heat wave of 1966—could be broken, forecasters said.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he’s activated a heat emergency plan to open hundreds of cooling centers citywide. As they come online, they will be added here: nyc.gov/beattheheat. There will also be extended pool hours and an expanded outreach of more than 600 workers.

In addition to the extreme heat, gusty thunderstorms are possible during the afternoon most days, including on the Fourth of July.

There's also the potential for life-threatening rip currents along the coast through Thursday evening, just as many people area heading to the beaches, the NWS said.
