WEATHER: NYC area to see freezing temps, icy roads after snowstorm

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Temperatures are forecast to plummet after Sunday's snowstorm, ushering in a period of dangerous cold and icy roadways to kick off the workweek.

Sunday's storm dumped over a half-foot of snow on many parts of the tri-state just a week after a major nor'easter.


Over 7 inches was measured in the Bronx and Westchester, while parts of Nassau and Suffolk counties had 8 inches. Swaths of New Jersey and Connecticut counted over 8 inches. Central Park saw at least 4.5 inches, while JFK Airport reached 6.5 inches and Newark Airport picked up 5.6 inches.

As the snow tapers off, it will become bitterly cold overnight Sunday into Monday, according to AccuWeather. Slush and standing water may freeze on roadways as lows drop to 19 in the city.

Monday is partly sunny, brisk and chilly. The high will be 30 before dropping to a low of 23 at night.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said New York City school buildings will be open for in-person learning on Monday. Vaccination centers will also be open. Alternate side parking is suspended through next Saturday.

Tuesday will be cloudy and not as cold. Another period of snow may mix with rain at times. The high will be 38.

After a brisk Wednesday, snow or flurries are possible again Thursday afternoon.
