NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Highs will approach 100 degrees on multiple days this week—and the heat index will surge towards 110—as the first heat wave of the season grips New York City through the July 4 holiday.

The National Weather Service issued an Extreme Heat Warning from Wednesday afternoon to Wednesday night, as well as an Extreme Heat Watch from Wednesday until Saturday night. An Air Quality Alert is also in effect Tuesday.

Highs will steadily climb this week. Tuesday’s high will be 89; Wednesday’s will be 95; Thursday’s will approach 100; and Friday’s will also near 100.

It will feel much hotter with the humidity, according to AccuWeather. The RealFeel temps will be over 100—and even approach 105–110—on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, with the heat index peaking Friday.

Records of 100 and 103 degrees, both set in 1966, could fall on Thursday and Friday, respectively, AccuWeather says.

The heat wave will continue for the July 4 holiday on Saturday. Highs are expected to be in the mid-90s.

The dangerously hot weather comes as a so-called “heat dome,” or large area of high pressure, traps heat in place over the region.

“These are extremely conditions,” Mayor Zohran Mamdani said in a video message Tuesday. “If the forecast holds, Thursday would be the first 100-degree day recorded in Central Park since July 18, 2012.”

Mamdani said he’s activated a heat emergency plan to open hundreds of cooling centers citywide. As they come online, they will be added here: nyc.gov/beattheheat.
