NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency effective Thursday as upstate New York faces a potentially historic snowstorm that may dump as much as 6 feet of snow in some areas.

It will be quiet – and cold – in the New York City area in the days ahead, with no notable snow in the forecast.

But conditions are expected to be much different way upstate, where New York officials have warned a winter storm will bring "intense lake effect snow through Sunday," especially to the Buffalo area, which is no stranger to intense blizzards.

Anywhere from 3 to 6 feet of snow is not out of the question during the multi-day snow event in Buffalo, according to AccuWeather. Lake effect snow warnings have already been issued by the National Weather Service.

Hochul, a Buffalo native, declared an emergency for 11 counties and directed state agencies to prepare emergency response assets. The state has well over 1,500 plow trucks and more than 5,700 utility workers at the ready.

The state is also bringing in ATVs and snowmobiles for potential rescues, and it has the National Guard on standby, Hochul said.
