NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- Thunderstorms and Canadian wildfire smoke will threaten the New York City area Friday and Saturday, but the stormy weather should clear out for Father's Day on Sunday and Juneteenth on Monday.
AccuWeather is monitoring the wildfire smoke situation for this weekend after plumes of orange haze engulfed the city last week. It was hazy again Friday, and while any upcoming smoke isn't expected to be as bad as last week, the forecast can change from day to day.
Stormy weather Friday and Saturday should keep the smoke at bay, but as conditions clear Sunday, the smoke may grow in intensity as it wraps back around and gets closer to the surface, according to AccuWeather.

Gov. Kathy Hochul said Thursday night that her office and the New York departments of health and environmental conservation were closely monitoring the air quality in the state.
"While we continue to monitor air quality and our brave Forest Rangers assist with wildfire suppression efforts in Quebec, smoke from the Canadian wildfires is expected to impact air quality across the state tomorrow," the governor said in a statement.
"Levels are expected to be far below what we experienced last week, but I encourage all New Yorkers to remain vigilant. If you are in a vulnerable group, please monitor the latest information and take steps to protect yourself," Hochul said.
Friday's thunderstorms could become severe at times and bring hail, damaging winds and heavy downpours to the city and nearby suburbs. Areas further north shouldn’t get hit as hard. The high will be around 80 degrees.
Showers will taper off overnight as temps dip to the low 60s.

However, more showers, and even a thunderstorm, are in the forecast for Saturday, especially in the afternoon. The high will be 74.
Expect a mix of clouds and sunshine with a few showers in spots for Father's Day on Sunday, when highs will near 80.
It will be sunny and pleasant for Juneteenth festivities on Monday. Plan for highs in the upper 70s.
