NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- Oppressive heat and humidity in New York City will last through the work week and likely into the weekend as stuffy air threatens to make the outdoors even more unbearable, according to AccuWeather.
Highs were reaching 90 degrees in Manhattan on Wednesday, but the humidity, haze and stagnant air were helping push the RealFeel temp to 100.
It will be mainly clear, warm and sticky in the five boroughs overnight as storms rumble in the suburbs of New Jersey and the Hudson Valley. Lows will only get down to the 70s.
The Air Quality Index was steadily improving throughout the day Wednesday after surpassing 200—or "unhealthy" for everyone—in some parts of the city overnight.
The AQI was above 100—or "unhealthy for sensitive groups"—all morning before dipping into the moderate range by afternoon. An Air Quality Alert is in effect for much of the area until Wednesday night.

While smoke from Canadian wildfires has hampered the air quality in the New York area in recent weeks, the current bout of bad air is blamed on ozone from fireworks and car exhaust trapped by the stagnant air.
The searing heat will continue Thursday, as will the humidity. The high will be 88, but RealFeels will again approach 100. A stray late-day or nighttime thunderstorm is possible.
It'll be the same story on Friday—highs in the upper 80s with RealFeels nearing 100. Another storm can't be ruled out.
There will be little reprieve from the heat on Saturday as the high dips to about 86 in the city and RealFeels reach the upper 90s.
Sunday and Monday are forecast to be a bit cooler, with highs in the low 80s and RealFeels near 90.
