WOODBURY, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- Workers found skeletal remains while digging a pool at a Long Island apartment complex this week, Nassau County police said Tuesday as the medical examiner investigated their origins.

The bones were uncovered Monday afternoon at the Eagle Rock Apartments in Woodbury.

The construction project, which has been ongoing for about eight months, came to a halt after the discovery was made around 4 p.m.

Curious residents watched and asked questions into the evening as dozens of police officers worked the scene.

Some were fearful the remains may be linked to the ongoing Gilgo Beach serial killer case, but a spokesperson for the complex said police and the coroner determined the remains are "clearly over 100 years old."

"Some people got a little bit nervous about it," one resident said. "Myself, I wasn't too concerned."

The bones were removed from the scene and transported to the medical examiner's office for further examination, police said.

Detectives ask anyone with information to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS or call 911.
