NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Iran's new president Masoud Pezeshkian, a former heart surgeon who took office in July claiming to be a reformer, told leaders at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly Tuesday that he wants to kick off a "constructive" chapter for his country, considered part of the "Axis of Evil" by Western nations.

"I aim to lay a strong foundation for my country’s entry into a new era, positioning it to play an effective and constructive role in the evolving global order,” said Pezeshkian.

It came as no surprise that Pezeshkian took aim at arch enemy Israel, accusing the Democratic state of "atrocities," "crimes against humanity," and "desperate barbarism," as Israel fights U.S.-designated Iranian proxy terror groups Hamas -- responsible for the Oct. 7 massacre -- in Gaza, and exchanges fire with Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.

Pezeshkian, who accused Israel of "colonialism," said the country's bombardment of Lebanon "cannot go answered."

He also addressed the U.S., saying it was time for sanctions against Iran to ease up.

"We have the opportunity to transcend these limitations and enter into a new era," he said. "This era will commence with the acknowledgement of Iran’s security concerns and cooperation on mutual challenges. I hope that this message from Iran is carefully heard today,”
