YONKERS (1010 WINS) – The mayor of Yonkers said he's interested in honoring late rapper DMX with a statue or street naming, as well as a memorial service at the city’s largest outdoor venue.
Mayor Mike Spano told TMZ that DMX’s family is welcome to hold a public memorial service at the Yonkers Raceway if they'd like to.
DMX, who grew up in Yonkers, died Friday after spending a week at White Plains Hospital following a heart attack last week. He was 50 years old.
A source close to DMX’s family told TMZ that there are plans for a private and public memorial and that those plans could be finalized on Monday.
If a memorial were held at the 7,500-seat raceway, it would have to be at reduced capacity given COVID restrictions.
Spano told TMZ that the city is also interested in honoring DMX with something permanent like a statue, street mural or street naming.
DMX, whose real name was Earl Simmons, died after suffering “catastrophic cardiac arrest,” according to White Plains Hospital. Mourners gathered outside the hospital after news of his death Friday.
DMX was admitted to the hospital after suffering a heart attack at his home around 11 p.m. on April 2, according to his longtime lawyer, Murray Richman.
TMZ has reported that the rapper’s heart attack was caused by a drug overdose, but Richman said he was not able to confirm that.
