Oswaldo Cabrera was given the Opening Day nod for the Yankees in left field, and Aaron Boone seemed to indicate that the job was Cabrera’s moving forward.
Speaking with reporters prior to Thursday’s season opener, Boone said that the utility man “earned” the starting left field spot, and when asked by Joel Sherman of the New York Post whether he meant for Opening Day or the overall starting job, Boone clarified that it was the latter.
So, expect to see more Cabrera in left field over Aaron Hicks in the early parts of the 2023 campaign, though Boone still added that he expects Hicks to have a “huge role” on the team.
As for Cabrera, batting seventh on Thursday, his Opening Day start is the continuation of an improbable trajectory that began when he was called up last season, playing multiple positions and hitting a postseason home run. Now, he is an Opening Day starter at Yankee Stadium.
"It's a dream come true,” Cabrera said. “I've been dreaming for it, and now it's happening.”
