McMonigle: Aaron Rodgers would be better option for Giants than Matthew Stafford

The Giants continue to be linked to Matthew Stafford as a potential big-swing option to be their starting quarterback next season, but Chris McMonigle believes the best option for Big Blue is Aaron Rodgers, recently cast out by the Jets.

Sure, the Giants might have a higher ceiling with Stafford next season, but C-Mac wants to see Big Blue draft a quarterback with their top pick, then have that rookie watch Rodgers for a season before taking over. If Stafford is brought in, C-Mac says the long-term outlook of the franchises changes drastically.

“Excited for Matthew Stafford? I agree, they’ll win 8-9 games maybe,” C-Mac said. “But you don’t draft a young quarterback with him.
You’re bringing him in here to win.

“Matthew Stafford is better…if you do that, you have to win the Super Bowl in those three years. That’s why you get him. To really win with him.”

If that’s the goal, then New York likely doesn’t go with a quarterback with its top pick in the draft, and in 2-3 years, C-Mac sees the Giants potentially being right back to the place they are now: in search of a future franchise QB. With Rodgers, it would be a clear stopgap option that would cost less money and still pave the way for the next quarterback to be drafted. That means more to C-Mac than a few more regular season wins in 2025.

“He’s better than Aaron Rodgers,” C-Mac said. “But if you bring him here, what are you doing it for? To win at the highest level.

“You draft Shedeur Sanders, you’re gonna have excitement. You draft a quarterback, you have excitement…maybe he’s the guy that changes the franchise.”
