Boomer and Gio: Mets should already be done with 'atrocious' Robinson Cano

The Mets picked up an impressive win on Tuesday night behind another brilliant performance from Tylor Megill, but Boomer and Gio couldn’t shake their Robinson Cano frustrations by Wednesday morning’s show.

Boomer in particular was irked by a Cano at-bat in the top of the first, when New York had a chance to set the tone and chase Phillies starter Zack Wheeler early to get to the Philadelphia bullpen.

With the bases loaded and two outs, following a hit by pitch to Pete Alonso and a walk to Eduardo Escobar, Cano stepped in and watched a hanging 90 mph slider drop in just below the top of the zone and right over the middle of the plate. In baseball terms, it was an absolute meatball.

“Got grand slam written all over it, and he watches it,” Boomer said. “Strike one.

“He ends up swinging at an 0-2 pitch when you know he isn’t gonna throw one over the plate. I was so irked that I had to turn it off and go back to the Ranger game.”

Cano was sat down on three pitches, and finished the night 0-for-4 in the DH spot. On the season, he has three hits, none for extra bases, and four strikeouts in 15 at-bats. Gio hopes the Cano experiment is nearing an end as he has struggled at the plate in his return from a season-long PED suspension in 2021.

“Buck Showalter is going to give him a little bit of time to show if he’s got anything left in the tank post steroids,” Gio said. “To see if he, as a clean baseball player, can do anything, and if not, he’s gonna be a bench guy who is gonna occasionally DH here and there…that’s what I hope.

“This start to me, is atrocious.”

At first, it looked as if Cano might have some pop left in his bat, logging three hits, two RBI and two runs scored in his first two games. Since then, he is 0-for-8 with three strikeouts. If you ask Boomer and Gio, that’s enough evidence to end the Cano experiment, and demote him to a full-time bench role.
