Boomer & Gio: Is Hal Steinbrenner willing to do what is necessary for Yankees at trade deadline?
The Yankees are in clear need of multiple moves ahead of the trade deadline, as the starting rotation, the bullpen, multiple infield spots, and left field have all shown their share of warts over the past six weeks.
Gio wonders if ownership is ready to do what it takes and go all in on 2024, even if it means parting with more cash.
“Is Hal Steinbrenner, with the money he has to pay and the luxury tax he has been scared of for a long time, is he gonna do some of the stuff that Steve Cohen does at the deadline, which is to eat salary and not give up prospects?” Gio wondered.
Boomer says Steinbrenner has to, even if it makes him uncomfortable. Juan Soto is only signed for one year, and this is not an opportunity the Yankees can afford to pass up.
“You don’t go out and bring in a Juan Soto if you are not all in,” Boomer said. “They are all in right now.”
In years past, Brian Cashman and company have pointed to returning players from injury as deadline acquisitions in their own right, or established players that have been slumping are seen as prime bounceback candidates in the second half of the season. Gio doesn’t want to hear any of that talk over the next week.
“I don’t know if Rizzo and LeMahieu coming back actually helps the team all that much,” Gio said. “Wouldn’t you rather have Ben Rice and the unknown of that…providing a spark? Wouldn’t you rather have that than Rizzo coming back?”
