Boomer: Giants should target 'cheap stopgap' like Carson Wentz due to underwhelming draft picks

Boomer Esiason declared on Thursday that he was “thankful” the Giants lost control of the No. 1 pick, as he isn’t sold on Shedeur Sanders or Cam Ward becoming this year’s version of Jayden Daniels.

With that in mind, Boomer believes Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen are motivated to win and keep their jobs, so a stopgap quarterback might be the answer.

“I would not do that, not for any of these guys,” Boomer said. “I think they can play in the league, but I don’t think they’re worth those high picks, no matter how desperate you are for a quarterback. Go out and find a Carson Wentz or a Kirk Cousins. Go out and get somebody who is cheap and can be a stopgap and worry about it next year.

“I don’t see anyone on this board right now who is worth what it would take to get them. Let’s just say they end up getting Cam Ward. Is he gonna be Jayden Daniels or CJ Stroud, or is he gonna be Anthony Richardson?”

The Giants are going to face heavy pressure to draft a quarterback, as fans have heard for years that Schoen and Daboll would draft and develop their own QB as they did with Josh Allen in Buffalo. But the timing has to be right, and Boomer doesn’t see any real difference makers in this draft, and the Giants can’t get caught reaching.

“You can’t tell me any of these guys coming out are the answer to a nine-win season next year,” Boomer said. “If you think any of these guys are coming in and turning things around, you got another thing coming.

“This regime right now needs to win. You’re not gonna tell me that they’ll win if they take one of those quarterbacks in the first round and run him out there.”
