The Mets were blown out in Sunday’s NLCS opener, getting punched in the mouth right out of the gates as the Dodgers lineup made quick work of Kodai Senga.
New York’s game one starter lasted just 1.1 innings and struggled with command through all of his brief outing, walking four and hitting the strike zone just 10 times in 30 pitches. By the time he departed, the Mets trailed 4-0 in an eventual 9-0 defeat.
For all the praise Gio has given Carlos Mendoza this year, he still can’t get past why the first-year manager continues to give the ball to Senga and Edwin Diaz in important spots.
“I love Carlos Mendoza to death, but I feel like he has two guys that he believes in too much, and that’s Edwin Diaz and Kodai Senga,” Gio said.
“Why so much trust for a guy who has pitched like nothing? We haven’t seen him at all, and now what’s his role gonna be moving forward?”
Sunday was just the third start of the year for Senga, who has battled injury all season long. He would be slated to start another game in this series, but both Boomer and Gio would be hesitant to give him the ball again in what will likely be a crucial game.
“He was horrendous. Horrendous!” Boomer said. “The Dodgers were all over him, especially when he walked the bases loaded. I felt like the game was over right there.”
