Lamar Jackson is widely considered to be one of the top quarterbacks that the Jets should consider this offseason, assuming he would be available via trade.
Jackson, a former MVP who has battled recent injury troubles, is at the very top of Craig Carton’s Jets wish list, but Boomer Esiason has some harsh truths for Gang Green fans.
Jackson to New York isn’t happening, nor should it happen.
“I will go to the end of the earth to tell you that Lamar Jackson is not the player for this team, the way this team is currently constructed,” Boomer said. “No matter what anybody says, they don’t understand the dynamics of the wide receivers and the quarterbacks. That would be a major problem here.
“If you told me they were gonna hire Greg Roman and bring Lamar Jackson here , I’d say ‘OK, you’re gonna be trading Garrett Wilson and maybe Elijah Moore.’”
Boomer says the Jets would have to change to much of their current core to make Jackson work within their offense, and an elite pocket passer like Aaron Rodgers would be much better suited for the team’s current personnel. Jackson would bring plenty of intrigue, but Boomer is convinced it would result in failure if he came to the Jets.
“The Jets believe they are a quarterback away, and that quarterback is gonna run a pass-first offense rather than a run-first offense in terms of him being the runner,” Boomer said. “It just doesn’t make any sense. No matter how popular you think he may be or how great he may be, it makes absolutely no sense. What makes sense is for him to go to Atlanta. It’s an NFC team and a run-first team.”
