The Twins have made the Carlos Correa signing official, leaving the Mets to figure out what's next after failing to land their coveted bat for the middle of their lineup.
In the short term, there may not be another move to equal the boost that Correa would have brought, but in the long run, Boomer believes missing out on Correa means New York just increased its chances of landing an even bigger star.
"You know, I think this just opens the door for Shohei Otani, if in fact they want to go down that road and try to make a trade," Boomer said during Wednesday's show. "I really do believe that that's you know what the next target will be. I don't think that would have been the case had they signed Correa to this enormous deal and be up around $390 million in salary.
"So, you know, that's where Shohei Ohtani comes in in this whole thing."
The Angels don't seem to have any immediate plans to trade Ohtani, who is a free agent at the end of this season. Based on the team's offseason moves, they will look to make one last push to try and contend and get enough pieces around Ohtani and Mike Trout to make the playoffs. But if the season goes off the rails early, Ohtani could be available before the trade deadline this summer, and the Mets could strike.
As for Gio, he believes with Steve Cohen at the helm, the Mets could have gotten Correa and Ohtani. But now that Correa is off the board, Cohen will be even more motivated to respond in a big way, like with a trade for one of the biggest stars in the league.
"I think he might have gotten both of them at some point," Gio said. "I think that just because he got Correa didn't mean that he was out on Ohtani, but I think it's more likely now that he figures out a way to get Ohtani, and quite frankly, I think he's pissed about this whole thing."
