Boomer very familiar with Giants draft pick Deonte Banks, loves potential of fellow Maryland product

Boomer Esiason starred for Maryland for three seasons back in the 1980s, and still closely follows his Terrapins on the gridiron every fall.

So, he knows what the Giants are getting in Deonte Banks, and he loves the pickup by Joe Schoen and company.

“I know him very well,” Boomer said. “He was a great player for us. He is big, he is strong, and what he really is, he is fast, and that’s why the Giants really wanted him.

“He was the fourth or fifth best cornerback in the draft, but cornerback was one of the deeper positions in this draft in the first round.”

Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale was clearly thrilled as well with the big, wrapping Schoen in a big bear hug after the pick was locked in. Boomer says the reaction was warranted, and if Banks gives Big Blue what he did with Maryland, it will be a home run pick.

“Hopefully he lives up to the hype, and hopefully he lives up to what he did as he was building his career at Maryland,” Boomer said. “I was really happy to see the Giants do this, because I know they needed help at cornerback.”
