Pete Alonso has been on a tear for the Mets, and recently became the first player in franchise history to post four 35-homer seasons.
But his future with the team remains in question, as Alonso is a free agent at the end of next season, and the Mets are in the midst of a transition following their fire sale at the trade deadline.
According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Brewers made a “significant push” at the deadline to acquire Alonso, while New York was selling off the likes of Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, Tommy Pham, and David Robertson.
Per Rosenthal, “opinions differ” on how close a deal was between the two teams, but that the Cubs had also reached out to the Mets, though no deal came close on that front.
Alonso is one of the top power hitters in all of baseball, but Rosenthal’s recent report suggests that his future in Queens is absolutely in question, and he could be the center of trade rumors this winter.
