This year’s offensive coaching change in Giants land: Brian Daboll is calling the plays, which he finally admitted this week - even if we've kind of noticed that's been the case for more than a while now.
“We all know he’s doing it, that’s the thing,” Boomer said. “Remember the game in Houston, where they start off terribly and then all of a sudden the second quarter, he's got Daniel Jones throwing the ball down the field? Who do you think is calling the plays? He’s trying to get Daniel like to look down the field and throw the damn ball down the field, stretch the field.”
The guys discussed it with Phil Simms in the first edition of his weekly Simms Spotlight, and yeah, Phil thinks the team will be more aggressive because of it.
“Yeah, I think so, for many reasons; for one last year, regardless of what it was, it was one of the worst offensive lines in the history of the NFL,” Simms said. “When I knew I was gonna do the Giants games, I said, let me go back and watch their games and see what really was the big problem. And after like three games, I knew the problem. It was unbelievable, and I would say it was twice as bad as I thought it was. But they made some good moves in the draft and free agency, so I think they have a good chance of performing well.”
And if the secondary is the biggest team weakness, as Boomer, Gio, and Phil seem to agree, they’re gonna need to be aggressive to get it done.
“That’s why they got Brian Burns; you got Dexter Lawrence and Kayvon Thibodeaux, and I was surprised by Thibodeaux just watching him and getting ready for these preseason games,” Simms said. “He had a much better year and of course, you're not gonna talk about it when the Giants are losing games and it's ugly and the offense is struggling in every aspect of the word, so he kind of got passed over. But they got three guys that can really, if the outside guys rush well enough, Lawrence should be a superstar. Watching him in camp, when your own team has to double team him every time they run a play because they can't block him, tells you how good he is. This could be a huge point for the New York Giants.
