NEW YORK (BLOOMBERG) -- New York City and much of the Mid-Atlantic will get a soggy and sultry Monday commute as thunderstorms sweep the area, prompting flash flood warnings across the region and disrupting flights.
New York’s Central Park may see rain falling at up to 1.5 inches (4 centimeters) per hour this morning as the storms push through in advance of a weather front moving from the west, the National Weather Service said. Small creeks and streams may overflow, with water flooding highways and underpasses in urban areas.
“It is a terrible time, early in the morning on a Monday,” said Tony Fracasso, a senior branch forecaster at the US Weather Prediction Center.
As of 7 a.m., 504 flights into, out of and around the US have been canceled, with 232 coming from New York area airports, according to FlightAware, an airline tracking service. In the meantime, a large swath of tropical air is clinging to the East Coast, giving everything a sultry feel until a weather front moving across Pennsylvania rolls through.
“Give it another couple of hours and that should clear things out,” Fracasso said.
