The Yankees announced Friday morning that they have made changes to their longstanding facial hair policy, which had been in place since 1976.
BT and Sal took the air shortly after, and both celebrated the rule change as the Yankees getting with the times and allowing players to express themselves to keep up with the times.
“I’ve always been a traditionalist, to the point where I do resist a lot of change,” BT said. “But there’s gotta be individuality.
“I think it’s about time. I think it was an antiquated, unnecessary rule….this was a layup. It should have been done 10-20 years ago.”
It had become a nearly annual tradition of players signing or being traded for and getting a look at their new, clean-shaven appearance after arriving in New York. Those days are done, and Sal says it’s about time.
He also says that those against the rule change should direct their frustration elsewhere, because getting with the times is something that should be celebrated.
“If the Yankees were being the Yankees, they’d have the highest payroll in the sport. They don’t,” Sal said. “If the Yankee fans have a problem with the facial hair policy, they should have a bigger problem with the fact that multiple teams have outspent the Yankees.
“Does this make the Yankees more appealing to free agents or trade targets? The answer is unequivocally yes. Less of a silly, stupid rule being in place would make them more appealing.”
