BT & Sal: A Mets/Yankees bidding war for Yamamoto is coming, and it's one Mets 'can't lose'

Assuming Joel Wolfe isn’t so upset with Brian Cashman about his Giancarlo Stanton comments that he ignores the Yankees if they come knocking for fellow client Yoshinobu Yamamoto, both the Bombers and the Mets figure to be heavy suitors for the 25-year-old Japanese righty.

And BT and Sal say bring on the war.

“This is the first time the Mets and Yankees are gonna have this showdown on a guy that they both like in the Hal versus Steve Cohen era,” Sal said Wednesday. “They haven't been after the same guy, but the Mets really want him and so do the Yankees.”

“It's on, baby!” BT shot back. “It was gonna happen at some point, but the battle lines are drawn! Same target, buddy.”

The first battle of the war…and a battle the Mets can’t lose?

“This is one that the Mets cannot lose, and my fear from a Mets perspective is that Yamamoto wants the pinstripes,” Sal said. “So, Cohen's gonna have to pay the Mets tax, which is fine, I don't think he's gonna have a problem doing it, but will it be enough? And what is that – is it $50 million more?

“That's a dangerous, and I would almost use the word embarrassing, precedent for the Mets to have to establish here,” BT shot back. “We want the same target, but we're gonna have to pay you X amount of money more.”

Maybe, but even as it’s the Yankees who have had the notably deep pockets over history, so too does Uncle Stevie, and that checkbook is the one thing he can fully control.

“It's the first time Cohen is in control of something,” Sal said. “His team on the field, he can't control that, but he can, at least to a financial extent control this him versus the Yankees. And he has to.”
