He was asked last night while at the Stadium and Tweeted it out just before we were able to officially announce it: Brandon Tierney will be filling in for an under-the-weather Suzyn Waldman in the WFAN booth Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon, calling the final two games of the Yankees-Guardians series alongside Justin Shackil.
Keith McPherson filled in for Suzyn earlier this year, Craig Carton got to sit next to her a couple weeks ago, and now, BT is keeping the FAN train rolling in the booth.
“I know you went to the Yankee game last night, BT, I know it was the longest game ever, but can you suck it up and show up for work today?” Sal joked as Brandon was on the phone, and not in studio, after attending WFAN Appreciation Night before he made the announcement.
“We were on the field, and what I found out shortly thereafter is that Yankees presented me with this amazing, humbling opportunity; I know that Suzyn's a bit under the weather, and I guess if I said it on the radio enough and wondered why they were giving everybody a chance to get in the booth but me, they’d finally listen! But I'm getting to do the Yankee game tonight with Justin Shackil and tomorrow as well, so I’m pumped!” BT said.
“I’m happy for you, and one thing I’ve learned from you in our year-plus together is persistence pays off!” Sal joked back. “You were kicking and screaming and begging and yelling and here it is now, you're getting the opportunity to be in that Yankee booth!”
Of course Sal was joking, as he is happy for his partner, who said how, while making the announcement to us all, he was sitting in his home office looking at an old clipping from early in his career that said his broadcasting dream has come true.
“I've dreamt big, man, and I'm not trying to overstate this; I mean, I'm gonna be in for two games, it’s Suzyn’s booth and she’s amazing and a Hall of Famer, but if you told me at the time of this article, or when I was 12 emulating Don Mattingly in the backyard? There's just certain things, no matter how big you dream, you just don't think that the world's big enough for that to actually happen. So that's why I really do use the word humbled.”
BT thanked the Yankees for the opportunity and The Architect, our esteemed PD Ryan Hurley, and of course Sal (who was solo Wednesday and will be for a short show Thursday) for letting him take it…and it’s a good thing Jazz Chisholm is hurt?
“Can you imagine the drop for the morning show if I actually messed up his name the way I messed it up prior, in the Yankee booth?” BT joked.
Congrats, and be sure to listen to BT and Shack on the call Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon!
