Hal Steinbrenner reportedly had his fingerprints all over the Aaron Judge signing, calling the superstar while on vacation in Italy to add a ninth year to the Yankees’ offer, sealing the deal to bring Judge back to New York.
Brian Cashman sang the praises of Steinbrenner’s role after news broke of the $360 million deal, telling reporters that the Yankee owner was “the Mariano Rivera” of closing the deal with Judge.
Now that Steinbrenner played such a role in the most important part of the Yankees’ offseason, Brandon Tierney says it will have a ripple effect through the rest of a crucial winter for the franchise.
“I personally believe that there has been an awakening in Hal Steinbrenner,” BT said. “I think the personal touch within the negotiations with Judge, made sure he called him up, Cash stepped aside, ‘I’m getting this deal done.’
“I think that was the first step of Hal Steinbrenner realizing that it’s gotta be go time here.”
Plenty of other big moves have been made around the sport, many of them by teams bringing in talent rather than retaining it, like the Yanks did with Judge, so as of now, the Bombers look awfully similar to what they were when they were swept out of this year’s ALCS. Fortunately, in the eyes of BT, Steinbrenner recognizes this, and will finally respond accordingly.
“You look around baseball, and not just the Astros, but the Padres, the Braves, the Dodgers, the Phillies, all loading up,” BT said. “I think there are a series of moves coming. I think the Yankees are ready to once again dive back into the deep end of the pool. I think it’s go time. It’s coming.”
