The Mets have now dropped six in a row and fallen 8.5 games back of the Braves, who just flexed their superiority with a three-game sweep in which New York led by three runs in every contest.
It was the tipping point for BT to declare that the Mets need to blow it all up.
“It’s absolutely embarrassing…the way they’re set up, they’re dead,” BT said. “They’re not gonna win anything. They stink. Billy Eppler? Atrocious. To enter the season with that bullpen is criminal. When you win 101 games and end spring training with that bullpen? He is a zero as a general manager for the Mets. Awful.
“It’s your only life raft. If you want to stay afloat for a bit, blow it up. And I don’t mean in a month as you approach the deadline. I mean now.”
What does blowing it up entail? First things first, dumping the contracts you gave out to aging veterans who aren’t performing, like your two aces.
“You call the Orioles, you even call the Yankees. Call the Astros again, the Guardians, the Rangers. You want Verlander? Take him,” BT said. “Trade him to a team that has a chance to win.
“Next call I make: who wants Marte? By trading Marte, Mauricio is playing every single day.”
Then, BT would work his way up the organizational ranks and start over.
“You have to blow this up. You have to start over,” BT said. “I would get a new GM. Honestly, at this point, I would get a new manager, and absolutely get new players…they’re not it.”
