In his one season at LSU, Cameron Thomas had one of the best freshman years the Tigers ever saw…and now, he’s headed to Brooklyn to join his favorite player.
“My favorite players are on Brooklyn, so just being able to play with them is just surreal,” Thomas said in his post-draft media meeting Friday, noting specifically that he is a huge fan of James Harden. “I can’t wait to play with some of my favorite players. It’s crazy.”
Thomas, who averaged 23 point per game in Baton Rouge, will now get to back up Harden and Kyrie Irving, which he thinks is the perfect scenario for him.
"I just felt like it was just a match made in heaven. All our personalities connected," Thomas said, referencing his communications with the Nets around the draft. “With James Harden being my favorite player, me watching Kyrie, how skilled he is, and KD…I feel like me coming in, learning from those guys, it’s just a match made in heaven.”

Expectations for the 2021-22 Nets may be even higher than they were this year given Brooklyn’s early exit, but Thomas will be ready to do whatever it takes to bring a championship to Barclays Center.
“I can play on the ball if I need to, iso, off-ball, running off screens, catch-and-shoot, get those guys the ball, anything,” Thomas said. “I just feel like I’m so complete offensively and an all-around player that coming in, I can make an immediate impact with those guys, and we can do some great things.”
And one other thing he’ll bring? As the hashtag goes: Brooklyn grit.
“I’m here to be a great teammate and bring a great attitude,” Thomas said. “Scoring power, playmaking, defense, rebounding, whatever the team needs, I’m bringing that. I feel like Brooklyn made a really good choice in me.”
It may be nerve-wracking, or even upsetting, for many to fall all the way to No. 27, but for Thomas, Brooklyn is the perfect destination.
“I feel like the team I’m going to is a championship-level team that’s going to be winning games and playing for something," Thomas said. "I feel like that is really going to help me out in my rookie year, so I was pretty steady through the process, because I knew I was going to a great situation.”
