Cameron Maybin set the Mets’ record for longest hitless streak to start a Mets career on Saturday…and then promptly ended it in his next at-bat with one of the dinkiest hits of his career.
Maybin flew out to right in the fourth inning of the Mets-Braves game, pushing himself to 0-for-27 and passing Charley Smith for the most futile start to a Mets career – but in the sixth, Maybin came up and finally got off the schneid thanks to this dribbler:
According to Statcast, the blast had an exit velocity of 63.6 MPH, the second-lowest of the game overall – only behind Francisco Lindor’s bunt base hit – and came with an expected batting average of .250.
However, it was a huge hit for both Maybin and the Mets, as the next batter, pinch-hitter Brandon Drury, blasted a two-run shot to left to make it 6-1, and the Mets ended up scoring seven in the inning. Some synergy there, too, as after Maybin had been hit by a pitch in his first plate appearance, he borrowed Drury’s elbow pad for the at-bat that set the record.
Also synergetic that the first hit went to third base, as Maybin tied Smith’s record on a hot smash to third late in Game 2 of the Mets’ doubleheader with the Rockies Thursday, on a play that ended up in a 5-6-2 force at the plate for an official fielder’s choice.
