The Giants released a detailed statement on Thursday in response to Brian Flores’ lawsuit, particularly his claims that he was sent on a sham interview with New York ownership, because the team had already set on hiring Brian Daboll as its new head coach.
The Giants argued that they hired Daboll on Jan. 28, a day before meeting with Flores, who spent the majority of the day with Big Blue to discuss the position. Flores argued that he received a text message from Bill Belichick, meant for Bill Daboll, congratulating him on the job days before Flores went on that interview.
Craig and Evan broke down the statement on Thursday night, with Evan arguing that the statement could be getting a little too technical in claiming that Daboll was offered the job on Jan. 28, when he could have been told by the Giants, or the team could have told Daboll’s agent, that he was their man days before putting pen to paper on a deal.
“It’s semantics,” Evan said. “That’s what I got form Boomer this morning, that’s what I got from the Giants. ‘We never offered him the job, and it wasn’t accepted until Friday.’ Well, did you talk to his agent a few days before that? Is it OK…before you’ve concluded your interviews, to start discussing a potential contract for a head coach under the guise of ‘Well, we haven’t offered the job yet, we’re just talking about a contract just in case.’
“If you’re talking to the agent Tuesday night, is that not offering him the job? If they’re talking to the agent of the terms of a deal Tuesday night or Wednesday night, isn’t that breaking the spirit of the Rooney Rule?”
Craig and Evan also specified that according to Belichick’s texts, the Patriots head coach had heard “from Buffalo & NYG that you are their guy,” suggesting that Belichick could have heard directly from someone within the Giants camp that Daboll was going to be hired, even if it hadn’t been made official until Jan. 28.
“They are gonna hold on to the fact that until that contract was signed, there was no deal,” Craig said. “The Giants’ defense here, and I’m not saying it’s a weak one, is ‘we didn’t sign the contract until we met with all the candidates.’ That’s the only defense you’ve got.”
