He did it again. Like a bull in a china shop, Reds slugger Nick Castellanos unwittingly made an awkward situation that much more uncomfortable last summer when he homered in the middle of Thom Brennaman’s on-air apology for using a gay slur. Castellanos’ solo job to deep left instantly became a meme, taking social media by storm.
The 29-year-old outfielder, who is headed to his first All-Star Game later this month, continued his reputation for excruciatingly ill-timed home runs with another doozy Monday night, socking a 419-foot blast—again to left field—while the Royals broadcast team on Bally Sports Kansas City was eulogizing World War II veteran George Gorman (father of Royals equipment manager Pat Gorman), who passed away over the weekend.
“There’s never a great time to eulogize someone during the broadcast, so we apologize for the timing,” said Ryan Lefebvre as Castellanos rounded the bases for the 17th time in 2021. “Our hearts go out to Pat, who has just been a tremendous loyal employee to the Royals for 26 years.”
What are the odds of Castellanos bopping two, near-identical home runs in the same park, against the same team timed almost a year apart? The lesson here is that if you’re going to veer into sensitive subject matter during a broadcast, make sure Castellanos isn’t batting.
