Make it three preseason games, three comeback wins for Jets fourth-string quarterback Chris Streveler.
After leading Gang Green to comeback wins against both Philly and Atlanta, Streveler took over QB duties in the fourth quarter and entered the game for the final time with less than two minutes on the clock and the Jets down 27-24 after a Ryan Santoso field goal.
And yes, we gave away what happens next, but Streveler led the Jets on a 10-play, 74-yard drive that took just 100 seconds to complete, capped off with a five-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Calvin Jackson on a fourth-and-goal from the five with 22 seconds left:
The big play of the drive was actually a pass interference call, as Giants DB Khalil Dorsey was called for a 26-yard DPI penalty on Jackson, giving the Jets a first-and-goal at the 10.
Streveler’s TD pass was his second of the game, as he had hit Denzel Mims for a beautiful sideline pass earlier in the quarter, and he finished 10-for-13 for 95 yards and two scores on his two drives, a QB rating of 136.5.
The 27-year-old was 8-for-11 for 119 yards with one TD and one INT against Atlanta, and in the preseason opener against Philly, and he was 6-for-9 for 62 yards and 2 TD. He also finished the preseason with nine rushes for 71 yards.
Streveler is unlikely to make the Jets roster even with Zach Wilson hurt, but the former CFL Grey Cup champion has put on quite a show in the preseason, perhaps for another team looking for QB depth.
“I’m just here to do what I can do, and show anyone what I can do,” Streveler told Otis Livingston on the field after his third comeback win of August. “Whatever happens, happens.”
This is Streveler’s third season in the NFL, as he spent 2020-21 with Arizona and was on the Ravens and Dolphins’ practice squads over the last year as well before signing with the Jets in July. The South Dakota product spent his first two pro seasons in the CFL, winning the Grey Cup with Winnipeg in 2019 and co-leading the league in rushing touchdowns that season with 12.
