Collectable has done it again, this time with a 1914 Baltimore News Babe Ruth Pre-Rookie card.
An unnamed owner has purchased one of these cards, graded a 3 by SGC, at a valuation just north of $6 million, surpassing the $5.2 million mark recently set and shared by a 1952 Mickey Mantle card and 2003 LeBron James card.
Said owner has offered fractional ownership to the public, with anyone being able to invest in the card – of which there are less than 10 in the world – with a limited number of shares priced at $3 per share.
“Today’s announcement represents not only a record price for a sports card, but also a historic and seismic moment for the sports collectibles industry. For the first time in history, via Collectable, collectors and sports fans of ALL income brackets will be able to co-own this record setting asset,” Collectable CEO Ezra Levine said in a press release.
This is the first of these cards to change hands since 2013, and is one of the rarest collectibles in the world – and the rarest and most valuable Ruth card in existence, with only one (an SGC 4) graded higher than the one being offered.
The card has been showcased at the Babe Ruth Museum in Baltimore since the late-1990s, and per Collectable, will remain there in a new exhibit that will allow shareholder to visit their asset in person.
“The Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum celebrates and preserves the legacy of baseball’s greatest star, George Herman ‘Babe’ Ruth,” Shawn Herne, Executive Director of the Babe Ruth Museum, said in the release. “This incredibly generous offer to exhibit Ruth’s 1914 Orioles’ rookie card enables the museum to offer visitors the unique opportunity to experience -up close and personal- the Mona Lisa of baseball cards, and to further appreciate Ruth’s continuing impact on the game, and on our society, as an American cultural icon.”
