Anthony Volpe went 0-for-3 with a strikeout in Monday’s loss to the Guardians, dropping his season batting average to .129 over his first 31 at-bats.
But Craig Carton doesn’t want to hear a single complaint about the 21-year-old, who fans clamored to see in the majors after a torrid spring training.
“I’m not gonna be a part of the Anthony Volpe abuse, which I know is coming,” Craig said. “I am gonna be strong in my defiance against Volpe hatred. If he continues not to hit and doesn’t make every play in the field…and the Yankees are playing .500 ball and struggling, and he comes to the plate with dudes on base and strikes out, they’re gonna go after him. And I won’t be part of it.”
Volpe is getting a day off, his first of the season, on Tuesday night, as he still searches for his first big league home run after logging just two hits in his last 25 at-bats. Ten of those last 25 at-bats have resulted in strikeouts, and the bottom of the Yankee order is struggling to generate much offense, but Craig says fans just need to take a breath and give the top prospect some time.
“I will fight off all attackers if you start throwing shade at Anthony Volpe,” Craig said. “He’s 21 years old. He got off to a bad start at every level in his career. Let’s be patient.”
